NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK 2020

National School Counseling Week 2020, “School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans,” will be celebrated from Feb. 3–7, 2020, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.

Bassett High:

Hector Armas has been working in BUSD at Bassett High School for over 30 years. He is more than just a counselor, he is a coach and mentor to generations of BUSD students. He has coached several sports, from soccer and badminton to track an cross country, where his teams have won several league championships and CIF Honors. 
Sandra Torres is a product of Bassett Unified. She has come back to her alma mater to help students navigate through their high school years. She is very active on campus and is always there to help students and staff alike. 
Suyapa Villalvir is in her first year at Bassett High. She has made an impact already, and students comment that she is always there to listen, help and offer us advice. We welcome Suyapa to our BHS family and hope she stays for years to come.

Adult School: 

Marlen Martinez has been working in Bassett Unified since 2010. In her short time here, she has worked at Nueva Vista, Bassett High, Torch and has found a home at the Adult School. She is passionate about Adult Education, and her implementation of a Media Resource Center is a gem on the adult School Campus. Her dedication to Bassett extend into many areas, including our Genesis program, our teen pregnancy program, and articulations with Mt. SAC, Rio Hondo, and our CTE Pathways. 

Don Julian:

Heidi Gutierrez has served the Don Julian Community for over twenty years, with the last five as counselor. She loves working at Don Julian, engaging with families and students. She has a passion that shows how much she cares for our kids. She wanted to be a counselor to work closer with students helping them develop their abilities while emphasizing the importance of hard work and education. Heidi want our students to be resilient, respectful, healthy, happy and successful adults.

Edgewood:

Veronica Montes has been working for BUSD for 25 years. She has worked at Bassett High and Edgewood. She was drawn to be a counselor through a calling to help our students and families and a love for our Bassett community. 

Nueva Vista:

Lisa James has worked in Bassett for 21 years of dedicated service. For the last 14 years she has served at NVHS, and loves impacting students in a positive manner, be that through getting them back to BHS, getting them on track for graduation, or helping them set and achieve their own goals. She strives to help them feel accomplished and build one success upon another. 

Sunkist:

Luis Salazar  is an eight year veteran of Bassett Unified. He first started off at Bassett High School, then made a quick stop at Don Julian, and has now found a home at Sunkist as our counselor. Luis hopes to bring resources to this community that he did not have when growing up, and want to give back to a community that has given so much fulfillment to him. 

Torch Middle School:

Chris Figueroa started subbing for Bassett Unified back in 2004. Since then, he has worked tirelessly with our students in the classroom, on the field, and in the office. In 2011, he became the beloved counselor at Torch Middle school. His interaction with students show how much he cares for this community and he strives to see our kids succeed in all facets of student life. 

Van Wig:

Dora Carrillo started off in education as a teacher, but quickly transitioned into a counseling role. She has worked at Bassett High School, Torch Middle, and now is counselor at Van Wig. She is passionate about helping students and families, and loves her place in the Van Wig family.
